What's on in February
Events in Scarborough
You could be part of this month's highlight if you take part in the Pancake Olympics, which are held on Shrove Tuesday, the 16th of February. Lots of teams will be entering the event, which involves running and tossing a pancake; a mixture of speed and skill. The event, which starts after the traditional ringing of the Pancake Bell, is sponsored by Yorkshire Coast Radio and Scarborough Town Centre Management, and you can enter by going to www.yorkshirecoastradio.com/pancake-olympics.php. Alternatively, you could just relax and watch the various teams as they battle it out.
Cinema
At The Hollywood Plaza at the moment, you can see Guy Ritchie's version of Conan Doyle's great detective creation, 'Sherlock Holmes'. In this version, Holmes is played by Robert Downie Jr and Watson by Jude Law. The film promises plenty of action and even a touch of romance for Holmes. Also showing, is the rather more violent action thriller, 'The Book of Eli', in which Denzel Washington wanders a dystopian, post-holocaust America trying to survive whilst also attempting to save the future of humanity, as you do.
Meanwhile, down at the Futurist, you can catch the long-awaited and much acclaimed James Cameron film 'Avatar', which seems to be heading for a hatful of Oscars. This film, a spectacular mixture of live action and CGI wizardry, takes us to the planet Pandora and a clash of human and alien cultures. If the film is as good as the hype and the special effects live up to expectation, it will be brilliant.

Theatre
At the Stephen Joseph Theatre, starting on the 24th of February and running until the 6th of March, you can see, 'And a Nightingale Sang'. This play, set in the North East of England during the Second World War, is the tale of a family struggling to get by in difficult times. Within that context, and filled with the music of the age, it is also a witty and passionate love story as the family's two daughters experience the joys and tears of first love.
Also at the SJT you can watch some of the best films on release. The films showing this month are 'Sherlock Holmes' , 'A Serious Man', and 'The Men Who Stare at Goats'.
